Sipnosis

Hace rato que Adrian, el hijo de Ross McElwee, dejó de ser la adorable criaturita que compartía paseos, juegos y charlas con su padre. Ahora pasa casi todo el tiempo encerrado en su cuarto, conectado al mundo exterior a través de varios dispositivos electrónicos a la vez, abandonando proyectos por la mitad, o a lo sumo practicando (y filmando: los genes pueden ser implacables) esquí. McElwee padre está preocupado por McElwee hijo, pero en vez de intentar encarrilarlo de forma convencional, elige un camino tan rebuscado como cinematográficamente atrapante: emprender un viaje a la Bretaña francesa donde, más o menos a la edad que ahora tiene Adrian, pasó una temporada trabajando como asistente de un fotógrafo de bodas. Lleva con él grabaciones, cuadernos de notas, fotos y, sobre todo, recuerdos. Y, a medida que suma búsquedas infructuosas y pequeños desengaños, Photographic Memory irá revelando la naturaleza dulcemente irónica de su título e hilvanando una reflexión sutil, casi proustiana, sobre el tiempo, la memoria (y los materiales en que intentamos fijarla), los padres y los hijos, el cine y la fotografía.

ROSS MCELWEE

Nacido en Carolina del Norte, EEUU, en 1947. Estudió en la Universidad Brown de Rhode Island y en el Instituto de Tecnología de Massachussets (MIT). Es director de documentales, director de fotografía y profesor de Harvard. Es conocido por sus películas autobiográficas sobre su vida familiar y personal. Muchos aspectos culturales de su crianza del sur están presentes en sus humorísticas y autocríticas películas. También incluye temas como las relaciones personales, la parodia, el fracaso, la introspección y paralelismo histórico. Formó parte del movimiento "Cinéma Vérité". Recibió el Premio a la Trayectoria en el Festival de Cine Full Frame Documentary, 2007. Sus documentales han ganado premios como Mejor Documental en el Festival de Cine de Sundance. Sus películas han sido incluidas en los festivales de Berlín, Londres, Viena, Rotterdam, Florencia, Sydney y Cannes. Se han realizado retrospectivas suyas en el Museo de Arte Moderno, el Instituto de Arte de Chicago y el Museo Americano de la Imagen en Movimiento de Nueva York. McElwee ha recibido becas y subvenciones de la Fundación Guggenheim, la Fundación Rockefeller y el Instituto de Cine Americano.

This course will focus on the myths of ancient Greece and Rome, as a way of exploring the nature of myth and the function it plays for individuals, societies, and nations.

Dear FIX,

There have been a few bumps in the road toward our peer evaluation of writing assignments. Two updates that will affect everyone doing the writing assignments and peer-assessments.

1. We will extend the deadline for assessments ONE WEEK. So assessments of the first writing assignment are now due Sunday, Nov. 4 at 11.59pm New York time (please also be mindful of the switch from Daylight Savings Time). NOTE: This will also mean that you will need to wait til after Nov. 4 to see the evaluations your writing received.

2. We are now going to accept for purposes of the certificate a writing assignment that is assessed at a 50% or greater mark from our peer-assessment grading system. After a detailed reconsideration of our rubric, we have decided that a 50% result indicates an adequate writing assignment.

Finally, you have heard from the Coursera staff verifying that the correct assessment rubric should have FIVE categories. This problem only affected those who got their assessments done within the first 36 hours of the assessment period. For those in that situation, the announcement gives instructions on how to make adjustments to your assessments.
